Meeting Your Heroes’

They always say you should never meet your Heroes. Growing up as a Kidderminster Harriers supporter most of my heroes wore the famous right and white halves. From the age of six I was an ever present at Aggborough with my Dad and Brother. I would spend most of my Saturdays shouting and cheering on the mighty Red’s. During my first season in 94, (jumping on the cup run band wagon) Harriers won promotion that season but wasn’t allowed up due to the ground regulations. By this time i was hooked and starting taking in more of the action and understanding the passion behind it. Not all my heroes were on the pitch, the main one being Roger Harris, known to most as Captain Crazy. The Captain would wear a sailor suit and his voice would bellow around Aggborough on match days. At this age I never dreamt that one day I would be in his position,(minus the sailor suit.)

The day I met my childhood heroes'

In my role as the Matchday Announcer at Kidderminster Harriers I would have a lot of interaction with the players, which as a lifetime fan was pretty awesome, If I had told 8 year old me this he would've freaked out. It was Sat Jan 28, 2017 and Harriers were at home to Nuneaton. Paul Webb was set to be guest in the Aggborough suite to those with executive tickets. This was outside of my scope so interviewing duties were down to the suite MC Mark Searl. Hearing of his visit ex harriers players Aide Smith and Dean Bennett also turned up to see their old team mate. 30minutes before I get asked to prepare an interview for the three ex players for half time. Panic starts to set in. I'm just about to get pre match proceedings under way, how am I going to prepare. Then it hit me, I was going to meet three players I refer to as my childhood heroes'. Is this going to be the moment when I say I wish I never met my heroes', Nope it was the opposite I got to have a quick chat with them, introduce them back onto the hollowed turf and interview them from the centre of pitch. It's a moment I will always look back on smile. I did it for 8year old Scott.
